I'll be headed out to see my son in May with a friend. I promised my son a vehicle if he got accepted to the Air Force Academy and it's time to fulfill my promise. We'll be in Colorado Springs to pick him up and then plan a father son backpacking and/or truck camping trip.

The farther off the beaten path the better with a focus on great scenery and relative proximity to Colorado Springs. The perfect campsite would allow a campfire next to a vista with ample star gazing. I imagine it'll be wise to plan something farther south like around Canon City given the potential for the snow pack to not be gone in the north. We are also thinking about a drive up to Cripple Creek from the dirt road in the south and spend the night afterwards, a wide clockwise loop that would bring us back to Colorado Springs would be ideal.

Anyone have a recommendation for this type of trip?
