Does anyone have any experience relocating the backup camera from the tailgate to the door on a Four Wheel Camper? I am specifically interested in how you ran the camera wire from the center of the door down to the OEM connection on the lower section of the bed. I purchased a kit from Rostra (#250-8663) that I will be installing the OEM camera into.

Here is the kit:

Here is the recommended location for placement supplied by RAM:

The red box is the ideal location to mount the camera and the yellow lines represent where I am planning to run the LVDS wire. Currently I am planning to use Electriduct 1/4" Polypropylene Wire Loom to protect the wire along with some sort of fastener to keep the wire located. I am concerned with the 90° turn the wire makes while the door opens and closes. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to route the wire for best protection?

I’m curious why you want to move it to the door. It seems that small jump in height wouldn’t provide that much more visibility. Your existing camera doesn’t appear to be in the way or prone to kicking when entering/exiting the camper. When I back up a trailer or the boat I often open the back door to increase visibility in conjunction with the camera. Camera on door means door must always be shut when backing up. Just wondering.

Thanks to everyone for the information supplied.

My goal is to duplicate the placement of the camera as delivered which produced an image that satisfied Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, Rear Visibility. If you review the "recommended location" image above you will see the red triangle represents the optimal placement for the camera. My only adjustment may the angle of the camera relative to the ground plane that is being viewed. I have not measured the angle of the camera installed in the original tailgate although I suspect it is pointing down 30 tp 45-degrees. It appears like the new mount is close to that same angle.

In summary - when I am backing up I desire for the image I am viewing to appear to be that of a stock vehicle. Many accidents occur while backing up vehicles and I am not interested in dealing with any unexpected distortions and modifications of the image I am reviewing.

We removed the camera from the tailgate and mounted it on the camper under the floor, by fashioning a bracket so the angle was correct. It's not ideal for sure -- fairly distorted and you can't see very high -- but the wiring was a lot simpler since we reused the wire/camera from the tailgate. I think your idea will work better. Wires that cross a hinge can be a little tricky sometimes, but you'll figure out something good. Send photos!

Here is my second revision which includes a "door loop" for the wire with the green square representing 1x1-inch self adhesive cable ties.

I wonder if it was left of the door hinge would ones brain figure out you weren't square in the middle. Not sure mine would ;) but that would eliminate constant wire flex. Loop is good.

Jon, can you take another photo from the left that shows your wire routing better?
