In my case, I have a Tundra CrewMax (5'8" bed) with a Hawk FWC (~7'). However, I had to build a small platform to lift my hawk up over the bed rails on the Tundra. So, since I have a platform under the camper, in theory, couldn't I remove the tailgate and the camper would still be supported by the platform. Granted, the last 1.5 feet is cantilevered, but it seems like it would work.
Any thoughts or opinions on ditching the tailgate?
On another note, anyone use one of these in conjunction with your camper? Would it drag on every drive way and dip in the road?

I have one more twist on the question "deal or...errr...tailgate or no tailgate?"

It will not drag on every drive but it will on some (eg mine). It will drag a lot on 4wd roads. We use a step that is much smaller than the carrier and take it off when going on back roads. OK for Interstates.
