Pam and I have been a lot of places and the trips have all been memorable. Utah is just one of best places to camp. Here in AZ there are wonderful off the beaten track areas. All of the camping we did in CA where I lived most of my life was just great. But I must say when ever I get ready for a Baja trip it's different. It always seems to me that we're going on an epic journey. It is far and a way my favorite place to camp and It's the place we've been to the most over the years. I'm not sure if it's the wonderful people we meet down there. The Sea of Cortez and all of it's surroundings. The fact that Baja is so not the U.S. To be sure CA has great desert and beach camping but its just not Baja. And of course the grey whales. Or maybe it's the whole package. Baja really is indeed the whole package. To those of you who've never been to Baja or have but not visited the whales I encourage you to do so. It is literally life changing. I've been going to Baja since my parents fist took me there in 1948. And if the changes we've seen the last 7 or 8 years are any indication, the Baja I once knew, and know now, will soon cease to exist so you better hurry.

+1, Jay you are right on about how special Baja is but I do give it a tie with the arctic. The Canadian arctic also gives one the same feeling of an epic journey. Even more of an epic journey, but lacks warm beaches.

The changes in Baja are depressing to me because I remember Baja from as far back as 30 years ago. You can imagine how sad Earle Stanley Gardner would feel today! I envy those who are traveling to Baja for their first time. For them, Baja can be a dream come true, a new discovery of real adventure! And frankly, if I can put my memories aside, I have to admit, Baja is still absolutely frickin' amazing and it is right at our back door. Laid back, great food, leisure trip, other worldly from our hectic, impersonal USA.

If you had any idea how much work it took me to move to Switzerland, ready a vehicle and tour the Sahara. Well I'd take Baja over the Sahara any day. And guess what, I leave early this Friday morning for Mexico and by Friday evening I am at Gonzaga Bay! Pics below of Gonzaga

We used to go on mini surf safaris along the Pacific coast of Baja back in the 80s but never made it over to the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula.

After reading this thread and a few others on Expedition Portal, I think this sounds like a great spring trip for next year.

Please post trip reports and details (or PM me depending on this BBS' rules of etiquette)when you get back.
