I recently completed my CPR recert for my volunteer park ranger duties. The course was taught by a retired LA firefighter. He added much to the course with his experience and details not included in the textbook. He went into detail on the 911 system to include a locating app called “what3words” which by stating the 3 words will provide the 911 operator a 10ft x 10ft box of your location. I downloaded it and it is easy to use. I live in San Diego and I’m in the process to find out if our 911 system is familiar with the APP.
It would be an easy way in an emergency to quickly provide a location and doesn’t require a cell signal. I downloaded it for free and was able to use it without having to sign in.

Anyone familiar with the APP and if your local E responders use it?

I’m currently east of Mammoth on a fishing run.

I'm always torn on this type of tech. I like the idea of being found quickly in an emergency, but I hate the idea of being tracked. I mean, I kinda got the camper so I could get away from all that big brother stuff.

As a ham active in amateur radio emergency services at the local level, I tried to encourage use of What 3 Words in my county with little interest. Our efforts are in using WinLink radio messaging. As that is, primarily, Windows software and we have GPS receivers that can be read by our communication gear and included in messages easily. We attempt to use mostly digital communications where possible.

The best use for What 3 Words that I see is in voice communications where spelling 3 words would be less error prone than transferring two long numbers. That would make it very useful for reporting locations from the field to 911 operators whether by phone or radio.
