2x2 fir roof rack cross members

hello. i would appreciate any input on this. curious if 1x1 doug fir would be ok for two roof rack crossbars. i am carrying no more than 100-200 lbs. thank you.
If they’re flush against the roof, possibly. If they’re raised off the roof, I wouldn’t consider it. Neither would be my first choice.

How are you planning on mounting them?

thank you. each (there are two) 1x1 cross member is mounted to two 8 gauge steel z brackets (about 4 feet apart) of which is mounted to canopy using two 3/8" bolts. cross members are mounted to z bracket using one, 3/8" bolt per mounting foot (total 4 mounting points). i really will only be carrying two paddle boards which weigh in at about 60lbs but may carry a bit more in the future.

Pick the Doug Fir carefully. Get the grain orientation to give you the best strength. If you have a wavy to tie down the noses of the boards, that would help reduce lifting forces at speed.

oh man. you know, 1x1 is only 3/4"!! i made a mistake. this fir was found at a reused place but they are new and straight. i believe someone had ripped a fir 2x4 because these are 1 1/2" so in effect tgey are 2x2's. does that sound like it will be better? thanks again.

the post heading was incorrect. the cross members are from a ripped Doug fir 2x4. so in effect they are 2x2's.... I am carrying two paddle boards one is epoxy about 20 lbs the other is a carbon fiber surf sup very light. my tie downs are really nice they have two strands of braided steel woven into them with locking ratchetsI may eventually put a box up there but by then hope to find some used metal. I am keeping this low cost. thank you for helping with your input.

thanks for the input. would a treated 2x4 be better? aluminum square stock great idea. would bolt need to go through entire square tube or just one layer? i'd like to keep top of rack smooth all the way across if possible

Ah no, i use the t track where FWC/atc install the Thule/Yakima bars. Cross bars are just simple 1x1 aluminum bar from Princess Auto or your favorite metals shop.

Holes can be sealed. I use butyl rubber tape for that. The t slot makes a nice strong base, with the butyl and a screw ever foot or so, the track is solid. 1" alum square tube makes great crossbars

Should the bolt going thru tube go through both layers of aluminum or can it go through the layer against foot. id like surface of crossbar extending over foot to be flush
