2x2 fir roof rack cross members

If you can get a bolt/nut into the tube to attach it, then there is no need to bolt it right through. I just use the T-nuts from Lee Valley. Note there are at least two sizes of T tracks and bolts/nuts. If you seal the hole well, corrosion should be minimal. (Although it HAS happened!!!)

ok all thank you for your help. the rack is almost done.
i bolted four, 8 gauge steel Z brackets to existing holes in the old canopy using two 3/8" ss bolts per mounting foot. the feet are mounted 5 feet apart in line with length of canopy and 32" across on mounting hole center. i found a very intact and salt hardened 2x6 on the beach a friend ripped it down to 2x3. the wood cross pieces are 4 feet wide and mounted to Z bracket using one 3/8" grade 8 bolt per corner. i am finishing the driftwood using vermont natural coatings eco water based sealer in bison brown. i may condition with beeswax after sealer cures. any upward pulling force from wind will be directed right at the steel mounting foot as that is where my steel wire encased tie downs that hold paddleboards down lie. i may install a makeshift air dam on front rack.
