While getting service I was told my 3rd brake light was ‘out’ on camper, but FWC campers do not have 3rd brake lights. I understood if vehicle has one then camper or shell is required to have one in California. Checked dmv regs and seems they are required. Can anyone help me understand this?

Your FWC rear center lamp is a clearance lamp. Who ever was servicing your vehicle thinking it was a high mount stop light. As far as I know, a third brake lamp is not required with a slide in camper. I wouldn't get to worried about it.

Thanks, I will not worry about it!!

Depends on State. In my state they do require a high mounted brake light. They will fail inspection without it. So I bought a 1x7" brake light and attached above rear door. wire goes down to the trailer hitch plug on bumper. has worked fine for years.

That is a great tip, thank you! While I still think it is required in CA I’m not going to worry about it for now, but for safety reasons it sure seems like a good idea to have one.

When we moved to Vermont the local inspector wouldn't even look at the truck until I came back with a rear brake light above the door. I used Bucklands solution and passed without issue. Moved to Idaho now, no inspection so the light is now gone. I couldn't put up with the error codes the truck kept giving thinking there was a trailer attached.
