The Lady and I needed a long hard ski in the high country today. On our way down Icehouse Road at the end of the day - since there was a thread aboutn the chili cook off at the resort, and one of the members here had an interest in fishing - we swung into the boat ramp area at Icehouse Reservoir to see if there were any pop ups around. We spotted a Ford with a Hawk and an empty boat trailer. We figured this was possibly fish more fishing more. On our way out Lady Ski3pin's sharp eyes caught a quick glimpse of a bobcat, so we thought it appropriate to post a few photos here!

Been around here since '97, I've seen one Mtn. Lion in that time but never a bobcat. Good sighting and great pics Ski!

Wow, never seen a bobcat in the wild before. I did spend the night near the lookout and heard some coyotes howling very nearby. My camera took a dump on me but not before it caught this shot of fishmore. Btw, he was the only one with a boat in the water.

The weather could have not been better, a bit cold at night. Thank goodness for the heater !! I wanted to go the chili cook off, but I was the only one on the water saturday, fishing was a bit slow, but I had a few tight lines. I could not believe no one else was out fishing, although the upper end of the lake was frozen over. Hey Craig, maybe you will win next year !!

We drive Icehouse Road usually once a week throughout the winter. The drive up is usually early in the morning and we regularly see bobcats. They are not dumb and will drop onto the plowed road for easy quick travel through the night. With this spell of warm weather we are having now, Douglas squirrels and other prey animals are really active. The Lady and I were doing a long ski again today and a bobcat came up slope and passed right in front of her showing no concern. They are really great creatures to see in the wild especially in the winter traveling on the snow. Their big paws are fantastic. The Lady loves to see bobcats and is always watching for sign.

I only ever saw one once in the wild. About 1996 near Snow Valley Peak in the Carson Range (Toyiabe NF). I rode my mountain bike to within probably 15 feet of him before I even realized it and just stopped dead, I was sorta frozen. He just stood there staring at me for a good minute or so before I split. Pretty cool, but honestly I nearly **** my pants.

the pictures are cool of the bobcat.is the road to the lake always plowed in the winter?where can you camp there? thanks frank

Frank - SMUD plows the snow on Icehouse Road for access to their hydro facilities. They do plow the boat ramp parking and the ramp at Icehouse Reservoir so you can launch during the winter. I see campers and self contained units spending the night in the parking lot. Just remember SMUD is not like CalTrans. They are not continually plowing. They will get it cleaned up and if you're snowed in up there, be patient and wait. They will get to you.
