The two occupants of this campsite left in their vehicle mid morning. I took this photo at 1245. They returned to their campsite at 1800.

In years gone by, I used to see items left out if a site is still in use. I did it too; though nowhere to this degree - just a few minor items to let someone know that I'm here and I am coming back. And I generally wasn't gone very long. Because back then nobody would take your stuff and they knew the site was occupied.

looks like a smorgasbord for squirrels, chipmunks, camp robber birds, u name it. i can see leaving a few things.... but that is way too much. too much for those types that cruz thru campgrounds looking for things to swipe. they see this, and they keep coming back...

Definitely asking for trouble. Either from 2-legged camp robbers or by creating 4-legged problem animals. Perhaps if they are otherwise thoughtful folks, a friendly conversation on how this could prove problematic would be worth your time. Some people are Just That Clueless.

Unless there was an emergency, such as a burn or sudden stomach ailment or a cut hand that needed treatment, there is no reason to leave your campsite like your disorganized kitchen table.

It looks like they left if a hurry. I agree medical emergency is about the only valid excuse.

I thought the table was nicely laid out.. notice all the lanterns are nicely in a row. That does not look like a table where the owners of the stuff "had to run to the hospital" Instead, they left an organized "kitchen" to come back to. Or at least, I have seen way worse, with open food containers on the table, and garbage bags lying around too. I vote for a pleasant convo and maybe getting a read on what they were (not) thinking. They might be open to education by a concerned and friendly neighbour.

So funny Vic! I too noticed how surprisingly organized things were for such a mess. I have seen way worse for sure. I guess the problem lays in the if and when critters decide to come and remodel their kitchen. I for one always pack everything up just in case we find another cool place to camp while we are out for the day adventuring.

All good points, everyone. I was curious what your responses would be. Thank you for posting. Not completely evident in the above photo, but the box on the opposite side bench holds all of their dry good foodstuffs. I was surprised the camp was not raided by ravens, ground squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, ringtailed cats, etc., etc., etc.

Two older fellows, jeepers, left in the morning for a day of sightseeing and returned around six. Always camp like this; old, set in their ways.

I'm old, set in my ways too. "It's our habits that save our lives." And we'll always try to do our best to have the smallest impact on the land and all the critters. Like we've never existed.

Yes, Vic, we've all seen worse - 2014 Wyoming USFS campground campsite in grizzly country - unattended. Sign on the table -

Ditto.

And you'd expect them to read, right? Not the case. Years ago I talked with a friend, a professor in recreation and resources at a nearby university. I asked about how to do proper signage so people would get the message. He said there's no hope. "Just go to a convenience store and watch how many people push on a door when it clearly says PULL right in front of their face."

It's it sad to feel like just giving up? More days then not, anymore.

Can't do that,if you do they win.
Saw one time camped in Madison CG Yellowstone. Campers left a few personal items nothing even remotely of interest to critters, like clean kitchen knives a table cloth things like that.
Very orderly looking but the camp host and ranger came by and took everything and
left a very official "note". Not sure if the campers got their things back.
One thing and it's not any kind of excuse they were foreign travelers. So maybe there was a knowledge issue.

During covid it was terrible, people with no experience or clue was destroying the land and leaving all their stuff behind for personal to clean up. They actually think that it is the park personals job to clean up after them. Sad.
