Our too smart ACD can open his own window, he swears by accident...but I think he is trying to get one past me.

Two easy mods have improved his riding & my driving experience:

Our Ram truck has the window switches mounted on the armrests. Our dog stays in the back seat area and loves to window ride...where he can occasionally step on the window switch, opening the window all the way down, so not safe IMO.

I decided to address this by buying a sheet of plastic cardboard (source: Plastic Cardboard from Michaels Crafts) and cutting it to size to cover the top of the entire armrest. This gives a nice flat surface and covers both the window switch and the grab handle area. The plastic panel is "stuck" to the armrest by use of self-adhesive Velcro squares. I then topped off the plastic panel with some 3M non-slip safety tape. Now he has a grippy flat surface where he normally "stands" with his front feet and no opportunity to open the window. There may be some trucks out there where this approach would prevent your mutt from locking the doors too!

I then noted that his nails were starting to scratch up my window jam base. I applied a strip of light duty duct tape over the jam trim, then applied a strip of the 3M non-slip tape over the duct tape. This provides a non-slip surface for his paws when he is window riding. The use of the duct tape is to make the very strong adhesive 3M non-slip tape easier to remove if I ever do. Clean the plastic with rubbing alcohol first for good adhesion.

Great tips, thank you! I have had dogs lock me out while opening gates, etc and rolling windows down as well. Even had a cat roll a window down on freeway returning from vet appt, we had a ‘battle’ going on as I kept putting window up and she kept hitting ‘down’ button! Fun times!

Like your hand work on the doors. Our center console in the car is perforated by our dog's nails. Should have gotten the carpet there first but hind sight is 20/20.

I travel with a beagle. My previous beagle would go crazy whenever he saw cows. He tore up the interior door covering with his claws so I built a 3-sided box to protect the upholstery

It gives him a large, stable surface to lay on, has his bedding, an attached water bowl that can't tip, he's tied into the seatbelt for some safety, and he can't destroy the upholstery.
He likes it, I like it, the upholstery stays pristine: win-win-win.
