East Side Sierra Nevada - April 2025

love the rock art. What are the very black angular thingies in the water basin? And... I could not make out the elevation of Wildrose from the marker... is it hard to see? or was I just not looking in the right place?

Vic, the benchmark on Wildrose is beat up and hard to read. The elevation is 9064 feet.

The black thingies are new since our last visit. Someone is coming in here, has run garden hose from the old well with a concrete lid, installed a pump and a large battery. When I first saw this in 2018, I reported it to the BLM office as it could be associated with a marijuana grow. Julie and I very carefully backed out of the area. Photos from 2018.

A couple years later, in the field, Julie and I met the BLM LEO. He told me he never got that report. He gave us his card so we can directly call him. Turns out not a grow operation but someone's attempt to water the feral horses. The black thingies cover the fill pipes for the basin.

Oh, what we find in the backcountry.

Those parts are beautiful especially when you have it almost all to yourself. Closest I’ve gotten to Wildrose Peak is the road to Aguereberry Point. It featured in a Koontz mystery so I wanted to check it out. Supposed to be a great view but I turned around after a few miles as I wasn’t confident the truck and trailer would make the round trip. Have you been there?

Legit issue and must be taken seriously anywhere in the backcountry of California and even some not so backcountry areas.

I’ve enjoyed all six episodes of your trip. Such neat country, so much to see, or in the case of Bubba Camp, not see. Thanks for letting me tag along!

I’m so camping starved, I slept in the TT last night. It was 29° when I got up at 5:00, but stayed comfy under the open down bag. Travel, soon!

We could use a gardener right about now. It's weed gowing season here, and I just want to walk away, hit the road and let the wildflowers fend for themselves. The herd of elk coming though the yard every morning don't eat what I'd like them to.
We haven’t seen our elk this year, but do have a bachelor herd of about 10 mule deer bucks, and an equal size herd of the does and yearlings. Toss in the occasional group of whitetail does and yearlings, and we have a potential collection of gardeners, but to date, they only seem interested in eating the columbine blooms.

I failed to mention this year’s crop of voles. The little 🤬🤬🤬 had an orgy under the snow last winter, and we have several hundred den entrances in the lawn. A gallon of caster oil is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Lordy, I hope they are actually repulsed by the stuff.

While I’m complaining, let’s grouse about the western blue birds that consider my truck their one and only place to relieve themselves. If they weren’t so beautiful, I’d get a shotgun out.
