I know there's already a thread somewhere here on this subject but after a half hour of looking for it I give up. It is no doubt my BB brain not functioning but I've tried on several other occasions to find stuff with very little success.

Found a set of brand spank'n new set of Derringers on ebay for $50. I have never had a problem with the old turnbuckles loosening up but I do have a problem getting these old bones of mine to lay on the floor and attach and tighten them. So my hope is they will be fast and easy to use and for the money if I don't like them I'll put them back on ebay. As I recall one of you has already used them with pretty good results.

I don't have the fast gun, but I do use the happi jack's Mine need a wrench to tighten. I think you'll have to use them on the outside of the camper. I use a eye bolt attatched to the jack bracket. I've had no problem with my setup. An added plus having them on the outside is it's easy to keep an eye on them.

I typed 'derringer' and then resorted the search results by relevance instead of when the post was made.

Here is the first thread on the list:

Derringers

Yeah I found that as well but there is a post with pictures of someone who is actually using them. Its a recent post.

Mark,
I tried your method and got different results but still incredibly cumbersome and never found what I was searching for. It just may be the way it is so I'll adjust.
Thanks.

Jay,

Slow minds think alike evidently. I recall that post with the picture - I said to myself, hey, self, those look small enough to replace my current ones, and look like they work in about 15 seconds per corner versus the 10 minutes that I spend on the current setup. I went out to some web-sites, and yeah like Keith said, they appear much bigger and "outside use" specific. I took a nap and ordered some shocks.

Let me know if they in fact work for you.

edit * I think this might be the linky that I saw... linky linky linky

Ron you are brilliant!!! How did you find that and how long did it take?
The Derringers I got were the powder coated ones According to my measurements they should work just fine but I wont know until I put them on and I don't think I'll be fussing with them until just before my White rim trip in October

Holy $hit I actually attached a picture. There is still hope.

It didn't take long to find the post - I kind of remembered the post was a trip report, so I just looked in there, it was the first one I looked at. The search tool wasn't a help.

HOWEVER

If you go out to google - in the box type "derringer" then ":www.wanderthewest.com/forum" that thread comes right up.

I may consider buying a set of those - they are nice and compact.

Here's a set of the zinc plated ones for $62. I think it's just a matter of removing the ring and installing the hook.

Any feedback on those yet? We're switching from the bolt down method to turnbuckles and thought the derringers looked appealing due to the ease of installation...if it is that easy! Also looking at the shorter Happijacs as a spring loaded option, but not sure if they are adjustable in length?

The Derringers are made by Torklift. I added 3/8 J-bolts to the Derringer, two quick links, adjust to fit, no more problems. Very easy to install and remove. I posted some picyures on a trip I made into the sierras, Weaver Lake. Check out the pictures on that post.

Ron,
I used the "RonSchon google method" to answer your message. Thanks for the good advice.

I'll be installing them mid Sept.

Ok The Derringers are on. It took a bit of trial and error getting the new threaded hooks the right size but it's done. It is significantly easier and faster to tie the Hawk down with them. It would be way easier to put the safety pins in the rears if the rear access holes were larger so I could see what I was doing. It's mostly by feel and it took a while to get the right rear pin in.

I seem to remember someone enlarging the rear round holes but - surprise surprise - couldn't find the thread.

I'm thinking White Rim will be a good test for them. I'm bringing along the old turn buckles just in case.

Yeah baby. These things work like a charm. Easy on, easy off with no loosening up. If they hold on the White Rim Trail they'll hold anywhere. Old dog new tricks go figure.

Jay,

I was curious how the Fast Guns worked out for you on White Rim?

RJ,
They seem to be bullet proof. The weak links are probably the lifting eyes in the bed and on the camper.

Jay, any pics of them installed? I'd like to see which bolt you had to replace and with what. I've been eyeing these for a long time. Thanks.

Depending on how much distance you need to cover a new threaded hook is all you need once you get the Derringers.

By "new threaded hook" you mean like one of the threaded ends in the turnbuckles? I suppose you could cut one down.
