Hey all,

Built the [thread=1677]dinette[/thread] and now it's time to think about cushions.
  • Does anyone know what type of foam the manufacturers use? Ben, Stan?
  • How about a good source for purchasing?
  • How do I cut the foam? (I ended up with a couple 2x2s for screws and support so the cushion should be notched to fit.)
Thanks!

Scott,

Believe in or not I used a regular handsaw to reshape our cushion foam, it takes a little practice and patience, but will work. The electric carving knife should work well too. I've also had a friend suggest a very large and very sharp serrated kitchen knife but haven't tried it.

OK, well...

I think the answer is a hot wire foam cutter.

I already have a power supply that puts out variable voltage and amperage, so I think I can build a nice cutter for less than $20.

Makita plywood blade

I have a 3.25" Makita 9.6v circular saw. The plywood blade that came with it is extremely thin and has a wavy-toothed blade. It makes very fine finished cuts in foam. That's what I used to cut up the Grandby couch cushions to make my dinette.
