We did that on the farm when I was a kid as the fresh eggs are a pain to peel and the steaming technique does help.
I now use the same technology but powered by the sun. If we are going to be sitting for a bit at the lake or at camp. Our sun oven cooks the eggs in about 30-40 minutes in full sun. All you do is leave the eggs in the cardboard (not styrofoam!) carton and point the oven to the sun. No water needed. Pre heating the oven helps speed things up.
We also (not in bear country of course) can put a pot roast in the sun oven, face it south west, go play on the lake all day and come back to meat that just falls apart. On long cooks we do check the oven and align it to the azimuth and altitude of the big yellow ball.
If nothing else it is kinda fun. We make cookies, pies and biscuits too.
