Low Cost Mods

My cab looks just like Patrick's--Lev-O-Gage X 2, one for side to side on the dash, and one on the driver's side door for front to back.

My 2004 Ram has essentially no flat surfaces in the cab. I used an app on my phone called "Level My RV" to get the rig level before sticking on the Lev-O-Gages. The app allows an Apple device to be used as the sensor (put the phone on the surface in the camper you want level. I used the counter near the stove) and use another Apple device (iPhone, iPad, Apple watch) in the cab as the display. See screen shot below. Screenshot 2025-06-13 at 9.28.03 AM.jpeg

When I'm with my spouse one of us gets out and puts their phone in the camper while the other person makes adjustments to the rig, watching their phone or in my case my Apple watch. When I'm by myself I don't want to get out to place the phone in the camper first so I just use the Lev-O-Gages.

What I really wish is that I could turn off the part of my brain that is laser-focused on out-of-level situations. My spouse cares much less.

While on the topic, what is everyone using to level it? Right now I just have a couple 2X6 that I carry around, otherwise I'm stacking rocks.

Camco leveling blocks for extreme situations as they nest together and stow pretty easy, but generally we don't use them, I'm a close enough kind of person. I tried a lot harder when we had a three way fridge.

Rocks work well
2wd truck problems, sometimes when driving on to them they slip out from under the wheel.
This driveway is weird, Nothing under the truck the X is perfect and the Y is off. I put bricks under the front wheels and now the X is off and the Y is perfect. 😆
This is like a metaphor for my whole life.

Even though I have some very fancy devices for leveling, 90% of the time I usually just use rocks if available. Faster than unpacking my chocks and I don’t have to worry about driving off in the morning and forgetting them. Of course once I finally get my rock pile perfect I’ve always spent WAY more time than if I just used the right tool in the first place. And yes, 4Low is definitely your friend when backing onto a carefully stacked pile of rocks. 2wd usually just knocks everything apart.

I'll survey the terrain surface as I approach. I always when disperse camping will park with the front heading for a fast drive away if need to escape or flee quickly. Never want to be trapped.

Pick a spot that looks close enough surface level. We sleep West/East if the West side is raised don't worry much if it is off some. Slightly down hill ok, back end down gives the felling of rolling out of bed.

If you have a propane refrigerator within it bubble circle is desired. DC refrigerator it is not important but level enough that you feel comfortable sleeping and being inside camper.

Never want the door entry way high in the air. If that is the case, can turn the truck around and jack up the front wheels instead. The rear sags some and that is all that is needed to get level is turn the truck the other direction.

Will either dig holes to drop a tire lower and fill the divot when leaving. Use rocks, wood or anything that is found there on spot. Last year bought a stack of plastic blocks, seem to work well. Two of them the plastic got smashed with surface rocks that I need to trim them so they can stack again.

You can drive yourself nuts if you are trying to get the camper refrigerator dead center with the bubble! Let it go, use the Hand Grenade approach, it might be close enough.

Don't know about you but I have had the fridge door open on crazy-butt roads.... here is a cheap solution.

Normally I pack my fridge full but I should pick up a couple of those for those times I don't pack it full.
