LP refer

Has or does anyone use the LP refer on the LP setting while driving? When I picked up the camper they told me the that the 12VDC would not keep the unit cold. I was reading on another forum that some do and some don't. I have the 4CF Norcold. Any thoughts or info before my shake down cruise? Thanks.

I only have the ice box so I have no idea. I'm wondering though - how does that work? It burns propane to run some cooling mechanism? Is it safe to operate a propane system while driving? (propane newb here).
