I believe the one you are talking about is ... "Back Country Adventures, Northern California" It iwas written by Peter Massey and Jeanne Wilson. The other one you were looking at was "The california Road & Recreation Atlas" by Benchmark Maps. I also highly recommend "The National Geographic Trails Illustrated Topo Maps.
