I’m going to Moab for the first time and I’m wondering if I should take my jacks? I plan to stay in one location for about four days and I’m wondering if setting up camp and unloading the camper is gonna be easier than packing camp up every day to go exploring?

I also have a small trailer that I can put the camper on and I am considering that as an option too.

Personally I always leave my camper on when traveling. It's just too hard to take it on & off, I don't like leaving it on the jacks (instead of its table where the weight rests on the base), and the truck is much lighter/narrower without the jacks.

Jacks when traveling have a greater chance of causing a problem then the chance of being helpful. I have seen damage done on campers; and as it is a corner, just a small hit can produce a major structural problem. Taking the camper off when traveling also (for me) takes the fun out of it...avoid any and all added stress! Opinions will vary. Love to hear back about the trip to Moab with some fun photos too!!

We also like having everything with us when we explore from camp. Last year we stayed in Moab with some friends. Our traveling partners left their camper at base camp and came out with us for the day. If I had a nickel for everything they wish they had with them and borrowed from us that day! They said they would never leave the camper behind again.

I plan to ride my bicycle at many trailheads and base camp at one central location “undetermined at this time” meaning I’ll need the truck to get around, but camp can stay in camp.

I don’t like the idea of taking the camper off, but I like the idea of having camp setup and waiting when the rides are over.

Horsethief campground has been recommended and grand view

These campers take less than two minutes to pop up and be ready to go. There is a reason I got rid of our Northern Lite (nicest truck camper I have ever owned) and replaced it with a FWC Hawk that stays on my truck full time. I got tired of loading/unloading the NL every time we went camping. And, that was at my house on a level concrete RV pad.
I also don't think the FWC's are made to be inside when they are sitting on the jacks. I get what you are wanting to do but I would definitely not go through that hassle.
Good luck and have a great time in Moab!

For a Mellow day, Dead horse point is some fun flowy riding. Have fun!!!!

I’ve been meaning to post an update for a while, but life gets in the way! My trip was great and I went solo, just me no dog!

I left reno and drove out on 80 to SLC and camped north of green river, I rolled into Moab around 1:pM Saturday afternoon and the place was nuts! I went to sand flats and got one of the last camp sites available.

I did lots of exploring and chilling. I did end up taking the camper off the truck to do a self shuttle mtn bike ride. I put the bike in the truck and rode back to camp using enchilada trails and the falcon route. I had lunch in camp and then rode the motorcycle up to the truck and drove back down.

Most days I left the truck in camp and went to town for mouse traps and such with the motorcycle. I really had a great time
In Moab and I’d like to go back for sure. I got to ride all the trails you have heard about either on the moto or bike!

I came home on 50 and spent the night east of middle gate. My equipment worked well except for some reason my battery pack got disconnected and failed to charge so I show up day one with 15% I had to balance use and charging for the whole week, but I made it and never needed ice.

When I got home the eco flow 100ah coach battery was on my doorstep to replace my old AGM. That being said the eco flow has died to zero 3 times since may 1 when I installed it. I only have the co2 detector hooked up and I have no idea why it’s dead while my delta 2 is in there too and is at 97%

I didn’t want to remove the camper and I had similar thoughts, but since I was alone it allowed me to have flexibility and self shuttle.

I carry an old backpacking tent I don’t use anymore and if I want to hold a campsite I just set that tent up and leave it in the site, and keep the camper on the truck. If the tent gets stolen it’s not a big loss - I have at least 3 more old backpacking tents I don’t use anymore for various reasons.

If a road is so overgrown or challenging that I don’t want to take the camper on it, I also don’t want to take my truck along it. So for me taking the camper off would be mostly about holding the site. A disposable tent is an easier way to deal with that for me.

Dunno if I would leave my camper up on its stilts like that... good gust of Moab wind and you could be crying!
When I saw that photo, I was thinking also of Flatlander greed ... someone else with an empty bed backing under, lowering the jacks and taking off.

But from the photos it looks that all went well, the selfie showed that a lot of fun was had, and I'm glad the trip was enjoyed. And from suggestions here maybe some lessons learned.
