Oregon & Idaho Fly Fishing - August 2025

Well, after two reports on fly fish'n I can't take it anymore. Off next week for the sierras to convince some brookies to hit the dry fly at around 10,000 feet before the snow shuts it down for the season.

Thanks for the inspiration!!!!!!!!!!! :)

A new Ross Animas for the Winston Wiggle stick, golden cutthroats, beautiful scenery. It’s a grand trip for certain.

Like you, I fear for places like these high lakes. Future generations may not have the opportunity to enjoy them. I’m thankful that we have.

Just finished both parts 4/5. It seems to me that your fishing this season has been
reported on by you way more than other seasons. Lots of great fish makes me very
jealous and glad you have posted them.
Some of the area you traveled and reported I have heard about even visited nearby.
You'll have lots of great memories to go back to this winter when you are under several feet of snow.
Thanks again.
Frank

Wow, another great TR. And so many awesome fish! I'm inspired, and thrilled that you are out there enjoying it. Laughed out loud at the term "swamp donkeys"! Thanks!

Good job on catching up on all your amazing trips this year! Now that you're caught up, it's time to head out again.

Where shall we go?
Somewhere with less than 25 people per square foot. Where there are no big Ram dualies pulling doubles - 45' 5th wheel toyboxes full of stuff; and a flatbed with two side by sides and three ATVs. Somewhere with no breeders and campground demons. Somewhere where the environment hasn't been effected by climate change. Somewhere where you can use that Winston daily. Somewhere you are insulated from Washington DC and its influence on those 25 people per square foot.

My recommendation is to see if you can find a funky DeLorean driven by a certain Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown and have him rig up your Ranger to take you two back to 1955. Or ring up Scotty and see if he can Time Warp you to the year of your choice.

Then again, "I’m a realist. My hope is gone." I guess Death Valley, Valley of Fire and southern Arizona will suffice and is waiting for you soon

I am not sure even Dr Brown could help in the shape our society is in.
Oh well get out and enjoy or picture in your mine you are standing in
a nice spring creek stream with a fly stick in your hand waving it back and forth.
Picture that and some of the issues drift away at least for a while.
Tight lines to all.
Frank

I've been up to those lakes myself and you are correct. Jewels that will be lost forever. There are a lot in Idaho though, so I'll just continue to explore (like you) for undiscovered areas. Great reports.

Thx for the TR's ski !
I just bought a used ross canyon for a christmas island trip in jan.
keep on truckin, and keep on your positivity. its tough, but what else do we have?
see u out on the trail.
go

Great places and a fine trip! I worked with a fellow when I was at the Lowman Ranger Station who told me stories about Marsh Creek being red with salmon when he was growing up before the Columbia Dams closed it off. oh to see that again in this part of the country. Lot's of good memories in that area for me: Fires, fishing, boating, living at Elk Creek Guard Station at times to dig snow off the roof. Glad you had a good time and thanks for the TR!

I’m going to tell on myself. When we rendezvoused with Mr & Mrs 3Pin in the Wallowas, I was all set to chase Bull trout… but as I got the new wiggle stick out, put it together with a new Lamson real, I realized I had mounted a sinking line, that was on a spool labeled WF5 F… In my embarrassment and shame, I plopped my butt beside the stream, and watched Monte pull a nice native rainbow out of the crick (spelling intentional).

Today I have redeemed myself by mounting up a line new that not only floats, but is actually of the appropriate line weight.

Kudos to Mr 3Pin for not spilling the beans!

aagghhhh... not when u want to figure that out... these reels and spools are great, but it would be nice to have a better way to know what line is on the darn thing.
