The U.S. Forest Service is firing around 3,400 recent hires while the National Park Service is terminating about 1,000 under President Donald Trump's push to cut federal spending, people familiar with the plans said on Friday

Let's hope not !!!!
Well, it's already done. Most FS terminations took place on February 14. A lot aren't actually recent hires, they are just new to the job they are in (i.e. promoted) and therefore on probation and easy to fire. If you live in an isolated community it's also likely you are living in housing rented from the government so you are not only unemployed but homeless as well.

As an example, 16 of the 37 employees of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area were terminated. So an area that totals 756,000 acres, that receives about 600,000 visitors is staffed with 21 people. How's that for efficiency?

"They" say they spared firefighting positions, but that is misleading as well, as a good majority of FS employees have a role in firefighting even if it isn't their primary job.

Did voters really vote for all that?

I read someplace that some of the terminations are being reversed. That is too little too late. The leaders of this downsizing effort have scant knowledge of and no respect and admiration for our public lands, parks, monuments, recreation areas, wilderness, estuaries, rivers, lakes, etc. They are urbanites than do not leave concrete, pavement, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and order-out food. Ignorance combined with energetic actions is never a good thing.

I find it sad that the form termination letter/email slanders the employee, accusing them of performance issues without specifying or proof. This may prove to make finding another job difficult. And if it is later found that cuts were too severe and the terminated asked to return, well, will they return to the rate of pay and benefits at termination? And if they do return will likely be on the chopping block again? If I was an affected employee, “screw me once, shame on me; screw me twice, shame on you.”

I spend a week in the Plumas NF in June and I put a lot of miles on my Jeep and I rarely see a FS employee now. Sad to think what it will like with even fewer employees.
