Can anyone tell me why a Pullman car would have a gearbox and a drive shaft? I'm genuinely curious about this.

Just a opinion I think it has to do with the powering of something on the Pullman car.
Like a generator for power to run infrastructure aboard the car. The drive shaft connected to the moving wheels run some machinery.

It was slightly tricky, but not that bad -- the photo doesn't show the approach. There was one nasty tree branch, cut right where it would poke through the camper. Was did a little tree surgery on that dead branch.

Not really apparent in this scene, but the range for several miles to the south is also burning.

The line of flames had just missed a property; the patch of trees at the bottom left of the line of flames has an occupied home and outbuildings.

Afternoon and evening progression of nature's fireworks, the Barber Fire, as seen from my back yard, July 4th. Caused by lightning about 25 miles away and on the other side of the range the evening before.
