Seems regulators do have a function
My barbecue became non functional. I wasn't sure if it was the connection or the regulator. Removed both. Connected up the hose together. I assumed the shut off on the grill would keep the gas off. Not at full pressure hoo boy. Then I decided to use the valve on the propane tank to throttle it down. Worked, sorta. Then of course I had to hit the ignition. Seems there was a bit of gas about. Fortunately hair grows back. I wasn't brave enough to open the valve all the way but I'm pretty sure I could use it as a forge. Hopefully thats my only "doh" moment for the week.
P.S. Ordered up a new regulator

I wonder if this experience also applies to bank regulators?
If banks had regulators maybe we wouldn't have the latest recession
