"This beast is not just a vehicle, it's your ticket to freedom........"

Somewhere between $150,000 and $225,000. Plus taxes & licensing. Very high service costs. All to drive paved highways and, maybe, wide dirt roads, while being mocked for wretched excess and being a fool that was quickly parted from their money.

On our most recent trip we passed a similar sized and overwrought 'Earthroamer' on the highway between Kanab and Page. Over the years we have spotted a few in the parking lots of National Park visitor centers or grocery stores. I have never seen one of these silly things off the road.

Remember having all the money you could ever use doesn't mean you have the brains/common sense to go along with it.It's my rig is bigger than yours mind set.

In the past few years I have been encountering more and more people with these "luxury" campers - and frozen water pipes in the winter. So I smile, offer them some hot tea and, if the truth be told, indulge in at least a little schadenfreude when I realize they paid more for their camper than I paid for my house.

One afternoon a guy pulled in next to me in a trailhead parking lot and pulled out a generator. To his credit he warned me ("Ill only run it until 9 or 10" and I'm thinking - dude - I'm usually asleep by 8) But when he explained that he had to keep his heater running 24/7 so he could take a shower and flush his toilet I had to resist the urge to say if you have to have all the comforts of home perhaps you should stay there. He was from sunny SoCal he was headed to Vail next. He asked me if I thought he could get away with "stealth"camping in a very large truck camper and a generator. At that point I could no longer suppress the laughter. I put my skis back in the camper and drove across the highway to another parking lot. Yes - there was a hand gesture delivered as I left. He was inside the camper on a beautiful afternoon - WATCHING TELEVISION!

Ah yes, frozen water pipes are one of nature's great equalizers!

Ticket to Freedom!?

Looks more like the shackles of debt! The best way to freedom and financial independence is low overhead and little/no debt.

The only places that thing can fit, I have no interest in camping at.

Similar to my yacht is "bigger than yours." Five hundred ninety two feet and six inches. I suppose in time, like Class A motorhomes eventually became luxury rigs based on coach busses, tomorrow's luxury personal yachts will become based on Carnival cruise ships.
