This is a series of videos taken during trip I took April 9-14, 1999 with author Alan Patera. George Huxtable, then president of the Death Valley Hikers Association, tagged along for the first three days.

We started in eastern Death Valley, worked our way through a few historic sites near Las Vegas, up into the wilds of the Meadow Valley Wash, up into central Nevada to visit a few more ghost towns before wrapping things up in Tonopah.

These videos were created from my raw footage for a long defunct forum and focus on specific historic locations or those within close proximity to each other. The videos in no particular order:

Back in 1999, I wrote and submitted a manuscript about this trip to then fledgling DesertUSA website. I think I got a whopping $50-$75 for it. I was going to remake the article to post here, but found that I am missing many of my photos from that trip.

Amazingly, after 24 years my article is still online. If it were a published book, it wouldn't be amazing, but in this digital world it is ancient history. I see that there have been photo additions to mine; I especially like the historic photos and period advertisements from the region, which I had little access to back then. It's in several parts, but each linked together.

I enjoyed reading your article, and watching the videos! I had a border collie named Charley after J Steinbeck’s traveling companion. Makes me want to hit the road! Thank you!

Alan found Charley emaciated in the backcountry of a national park in Washington state. It was fun watching Charley “herding” Alan often as we would walk along on our travels. He lived to chase a tennis ball. He is featured in all videos where Alan and I travel together that I feature on this forum.
