Earlier tonight while watching Oregon Public Television we had two Emergency Alerts for extreme avalanche conditions. One was for the Northern Oregon Cascades, the other for the Southern Washington Cascades. I don’t ever recall an avalanche warning broadcast over television. That region is receiving around 3” of rain over the next few days, so it’s going to be treacherous in snow country.

We were taken aback by it on OPB radio and surprisingly didn’t get alert on cell phone

Not just that local station. The avalanche alert was repeated multiple times on all local stations in the Portland area. Very annoying as there was no possibility of an avalanche locally. Plus they started alerting about dark and few people would be heading into avalanche country that late.

Putting the alert on local radio stations in avalanche country and alerts on any cell phones in the hazard area would be a better idea. As it was it was an electronic version of crying wolf, it leads to fewer people taking the warning seriously.

Two ski patrol persons at Mammoth Mountain, who were doing avalanche control, got caught in a slide. One uninjured, the other person badly injured and transported. That person died a couple days ago.
