We were planning on doing a weekend getaway and Pvstoy has us considering Hway 395, most likely from Bridgeport to the Mammoth Lakes area. Probably a little late for the fall colors but the views always make the drive worth it. We are not familiar enough with the area to know where to camp. Any suggestions some of you may have would be appreciated. Ideal locations would be quiet and isolated.

Thanks, Ted

Bush Camp

Ted,

The Wife, 7 and 2 year kids, and I stayed up Georges Creek for a night this past monday. It was nice. Definately off the beaten path a bit. THe road aint great and no ammenities. Stunning views. If you go off road near Manzanar and follow foothill road, you will see a small sign that says georges. We went "up" at that fork about another mile (4x4). If we had stayed straight, there is a great little spot about another 5 minutes down the road in the aspens on the creek.found that the next morning on the way out..maybe 5 miles of dirt to get up there.

Here is our camp for the night..Granted it was late in the day, and we were very tired so we "settled" for this spot as it was relatively level and open area for the kids. I guess the area burned this summer at some point....

It's a little south of the area you're talking about but I spent a night last year at the Diaz Lake campground right under Mt. Whitney, about 2 miles south of Lone Pine. For a formal campground it was really nice, scenic and quiet on the back side of the lake.

Just an FYI for future reference, if people are looking for nice places to camp on 395.

The wife and I really like the FS camp grounds along Rock Creek. At this time of year they shouldn't be very crowded. If you follow the road up past Rock Creek Lake there is a great hike from the parking lot along the creek. About every 1/4 mile or so you come to another lake. I beleave the last lake is Emerald Lake. This lake is the size of a small pond. However it sits in a granit bowl and is spectacular. Convict Lake is another must see.

The whole area is either National Forest, BLM or LA DWP land. So camping anywhere should be ok. Just whatch for the " No Camping " signs. Keep on camping.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Ted,

When do you plan to go?

Like what was said you can stealth camp in many locations on various dirt roads along the way, but in the paved main roads up canyons watch for signs to camp only in designated sites only.

Exploring side dirt roads you will find areas that are hidden from view and you are not bothered.

Mammoth Lakes I like to head out the road from Shady Rest campground that is behind the US Forest Service Visitor center as you come into town. You will see a sign on the pavement No Camping for the next two miles. Then you hit dirt and after the allowed miles there is a permitted to camp sign. After that you are free to camp. It is hard to explain where I go but, after the sign you take the first right, follow up the hill for a bit. Take a left and will side slope the hill. Then a right that takes you up to a dead end at rocks. I camp there and it has a good view of the surroundings. Over the years there has been a lot more traffic there.

If you are at Lone Pine for some of you, I head up to the Alabama Hills. Turn right on Movie Set Road and you can just wander all over the place. There are windows and arches hidden in various spots. The Visitor Center can give you paper on where some of them are.

You can’t go wrong in some of the campgrounds and they have nice views, I just prefer to stealth camp and save the money to have dinner at the Virginia Creek Settlement just before the Bodie turn off after Bridgeport.

Hope you have a great trip and see lots of wonderful views.

East of Big Pine

If you go east of Big Pine, on Hwy 168, then take Death Valley Rd. maybe 10 miles or so you'll find some nice secluded side roads with camping locations.

We did some of that on the way home...Very cool!!

Pvs Toy, Can you camp anywhere in there?? or designated sites only??(we didn't see any sites, but didn't look around that much)

Tomas,

There are no dedicated spots to camp in that area. You just pick a dirt road and find a spot. Been doing that for years there.

Looks like in your picture you are at the spot on the road heading back to pavement. That section runs east west and if you head the way you are going there is a right turn off the main road. Just down that section is a wide area for parking and there are two windows in that area.

I noticed the beautifully graded road in Tomas' pic. Like freshly groomed corduroy on the ski slopes. How come CA has money and resources to keep that up and not the carpy concrete freeways with the expansion joints that separate and cause a that terrible bounce? Don't get me wrong, the back country is more imporant anyway IMO.:D
