Yakima Rack Install

Has anyone mounted the Yakima small gutter type mounts to attach their rack to the top of your camper? If so, are they mounted on the side of the roof or on the top? Any suggestions?

I have seen people install aftermarket top loader brackets (these go on top of the roof) and side loader brackets (these go on the side of the roof) in the past.

We usually don't recommend them, but they have been used with some success over the years.

See pictures of after market installs done by customers in the past.


We usually recommend the yakima "tracks" on the roof with the proper towers and cross bars.

I had been undecided on side loaders or yakima tracks for my roof, but after scraping away the old, caked-on alkyd roof coating from a previous owner I discovered six sets of threaded inserts. I am assuming these were intended for a rack to be installed on, no? Are they alright to use?
