You know you're a geezer when.......................

If y'all are gonna discuss punctuation - STOP THE BRUTAL APOSTROPHE ABUSE!
That little mark was born to indicate possession (It was Bob's car) or contraction (omission of letters - as in shortening you are to you're)

And when your phone puts an apostrophe on "Sierra's" (and I ask Sierra's what? and they say - well, my phone said -) please understand it is trying to make sense out of your misspelling and while the phone is clearly better versed in the language than you are it is still wrong.

I am not only a geezer - I am a former elementary school teacher.

I got a talking-to last night for using Oxford commas. Apparently those are verbotten in our house. Likely in the garage, the camper, and while on the road as well. (I'm at work, it's safe!) :)

Maternal grandmother was an English major. Only the foolhardy played against her in Scrabble. Ever seen "qua" used in Scrabble? On a triple word score? That was normal play for her. I'm pretty sure that I was a constant trial to her.....

... when a group of us started reminiscing about the days of 2/1¢ bubble gum.

... realizing why my father always complained about "growing old ain't for sissies."

... why a friend of mine always told me that he never felt good.

Maybe I'm not that old. I had to look up what a Norwegian welt was. I never was technical about any of my camping and hiking gear. Just whatever looked usable that I could get from KMart or Pic-N-Save ...

Mountaineering boots were built with the Norwegian welt. That was back when the uppers - full leather - really lasted and a good pair of boots might last through one resoling, maybe two if you were really lucky. We always took our boots - mountain and tele - to Wilson's in Bishop for new soles. Nowadays the uppers wear out about the same as the soles and we just buy new boots.

That's a memory jog - My Super Guides lasted many years. My next pair of Asolo boots just couldn't cut it so I had a local cobbler/climber friend in Portland rebuild them with Super Guide welt/shank. They're still hanging in the garage.

I knew we were in trouble when I pulled a practically new pair of Asolo hikers out of the box and the sole on one was just hanging. I sent them back and was told they were too old. I said they were in the box in my closet only to be told “the PU just breaks down over time” WHAT! Since then I have had several more polyethylene soles fall apart. Barge Cement is my new favorite tool.

I’m old enough to remember the Asolo XC boots that came with a 3 pin toe and sole that would break just behind the pin sockets.

Fondly referred to as Kenko Crackers by our ski crowd. Kenko was the importer as I recall.

My wife had exactly this happen. She liked her new boots several years ago so she bought a second pair and put it in the closet for when the first ones wore out. Pulled them out last spring and they fell apart on the first hike. Maddening!

Ah, memories of the not so good old days. How 'bout the Asolo Snowpine 3 pin boots (our obvious namesake) from back in the days of riding the cow, that all our companions called the "blisterpines."
