The marker lights have to do with the width of the vehicle.  DRW are required to have the marker lights on the roof.

For Ram at least, the only things I can think of are tires (6 instead of 4, if DRW) and gearing (some 1T have lower rear gear ratio, affect gas milage).

Response to the above by Slus...Then a FWC (Hawk) connected to a 3500 Ram would qualify for non-commercial plates/registration?
