My brother sent me some pictures of the Winter King opening. He included this in his message, today you lost a good friend, Stan Carpenter and his deckhand were lost this morning in a rollover in bad weather out of Sitka, he told me that they searched all day, only to find a very small amount of debris. I just got the email, it will take a while for it to sink in, right now it's just like a newspaper headline, a truly wise and nice man. This is my brother coming home to Sitka, after the search, Sitka is one of the most beautiful places on the earth, just not today.

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven
half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Our hearts are with you and yours.

I logged in to read another banter from you, only to find the worst kind of news. I don't know if you believe in prayer (to tell you the truth, I'm not sure that I do), but the families of Stan Carpenter and his deckhand will be in my prayers tonight (for what ever that is worth). If you know the name of Stan's deckhand and care to share it, I'll include his family as well.

Fisherman: Sorry to hear about your friends. I have been seeing a lot of loss lately and its part of why I bought the camper. We need to do the things we like before its too late. My prayers are with you.

I don't know the name of his deckhand, I knew Stan very well, because he was from down here and was one of the guys who relocated to Alaska because he wanted to keep on fishing. I don't know for sure how old he was, but he had to be in his 70s. The thing about the fishing community is this, it's small, for the most part we all know each other, so when something goes wrong we all hear about it. In the old days this happened a lot more, because we didn't have the saftey equipment we have today, epirbs, hydorstatic rafts, and even sat. and cell phones. Im puzzled because the haven't found the raft. It was apperantly a rollover, these situations happen fast, sometimes you don't have time to do too much. I had a call from my brother this morning, he didn't say anything about it, I thought he was fishing. When this happens, I ask myself would I feel any different if it was a car accident, or a heart attack or something like that, all they were doing was fishing, and they paid a high price for the privlage, if there's fishing in heaven,I'm sure they'll be doing it.

God I hate news like this. Jon, no amount of consolation makes it better but you are among friends.

Sorry to hear that you lost a friend. I did not know him... but I know you and the part for me that makes me feel sad is how you must be feeling at his moment. Bad news such as this never has a good form.. whether it abrupt or prolonged... it always hurts to see or hear of the passing of a good friend or one of the people we love. My wife and I send good positive thoughts your way. Hopefully YOUR day will have a positive ending!

It's not about me, and maybe not about Stan. I see the news this morning. Four cops dead in Oakland, assinated for nothing, plane crash in a Montana grave yard,a family with their kids going sking. I'm going to miss Stan, I know that Stan knew in the back of his mind that this could happen to him, just like I do. I've thought about the risk, balanced that with the fact that I would rather do what I do than anything else, I decided the risk was acceptable. This is about all of us, when we wake up in the morning, it's to a dangerous world. What I get out of this is, we all have people in our lives that we care about and love. Make sure you tell them that every chance you get, it's sometning you can't do often enough.

A horrible way to go..but something you think about anytime its rough, "what if?".. You try to be as prepared as you can.. static life boat, survival suits and such. we carry that stuff and aren't required to...But if you have no idea it's coming, like a rollover..whatayado? Hard to have your survival suit under your arm all the time...the most hazardous profession in the country, and will stay that way as long as they let us do it.

Sorry to hear the news:(...If they had to go, I would rather hear that fishing brothers went down with thier boat, than on the 405 fwy or a hail of bullets...RIP Stan and Crew..
