We've learned over the years that there were a lot of things we had packed that we didn't really need and they don't get packed now. We limit ourselves to 1 plastic container of clothes, etc. Over time, you'll figure out what you need and what you have to have. For instance, we had an axe and a saw packed. You really don't need both. We've also really reduced what cooking gear we need.
Limited Storage? 10 lbs of stuff in a 5 lbs cabinet.

I remember there being discussion about the flexibility of the roof and the purpose for the gap in the first place. I think it depends how much off roading you do, but something to consider.
And in case you didn’t know, trick Google into searching just the website you want. Type
Site:www.wanderthewest.com solar
into the search bar. Substitute whatever you are interested in for solar. Fastest way to find what you are looking for. Switch to images (Google tab) to see lots of ideas. Good luck.

We have a 28" x 45" Eezi Awn K9 stainless steel table that our FWC dealer in Salt Lake City mounted under the overhang when we bought the camper. I also added a box I made with 1/4" Luan Plywood and 1 x 4 pine that hangs under the overhang on the drivers side that carries my 8" Extend & Climb Ladder that I use for tying my kayaks up top.
To ensure I have the clearance on between the overhang and the roof of my Dodge 2500, I added a space made of 2 x 3's on edge in the bed which lifts the camper 1-5/8". This also gives me the room to store my kayak paddles in along side the camper and mount my shovel under the side overhang plus it's easy enough to stuff my sand carpet from the outside.
I've been all over Baja and never had a problem with this.

Since I alway carry kayaks, bicycles, inflatable boat and Honda motor, we have a Ruger 4 x 6 offroad trailer. It allows me the luxury of carrying an extra fridge (ARB) that I use as a freezer (set on 0 degrees). I carry extra 12V batteries and 200 watts of folding solar panels to run it. There is also room for a SunOven and all my fishing tackle.

thanks for the links and suggestions! These look like exactly what I had in mind. Just not clear on whether the z-bar or whatever is used is secured to the underside. Is it through-bolted?
