I'm trying to decide on an awning setup for my Bobcat and am wondering if it's viable to mount on the roof rails. I have upgraded struts and am not so worried about raising it, but I'm not sure if it's stupid to have the thing up so high from a leverage on the roof if it's windy standpoint.

I'd like to be able to get a 270 wraparound. We often camp where it's rainy, but we also usually have bikes with us. The bikes are carried on a vertical rack (Yakima Hangtight) with a swingout that swings to the passenger side, and I'd also like the awning on the passenger side. This means I need it way up high. The rack itself clears the roof by an inch or two, obviously much taller with bike wheels up there also (else I'd look at extended brackets on the jack attachments). 

It would also be cool to have it covering the windows too. Rather not get one just to the side because I want door coverage for my steps and boots.

Well the update is that I ended up mounting a 5' Kammok Crosswing on the roof's Yakima tracks directly so I can pull it out over my door. It's 38lbs or so but I beefed up with Suspa struts. I can pull it out 3, 5, or 7 feet depending on conditions and the bike rack is out of the way. No coverage to the side but I got this one for a steal so I'll see how it goes. Doesn't interfere with latches and doesn't add any height to the roof since my solar is taller on the bars already.

Heres a quick one from a parking lot at 3’ extension.

You can also change the angle to point it down a little which I may do, but for now level is fine!

Mopwater, if you could post a close up of how it attaches to the Yakima track I'd appreciate it.

After thinking about the cantilever on the Yakima tracks I ended up not going that route actually. It would be okay if I only pulled it out 3' but that isn't really worth dealing with the weight. Considering a 270 now.

i put a 270 alucab awning on my ocelot.  used brkts that attach to the lifting brkts to support the awning. worked great. oh, the brkts were from mule.
