I have to apologize to who ever wrote me a personal email about camping in Morro Bay. I have a new Droid phone and accidentally deleted the email after I read it.
So here are the camping spots I know of in Morro Bay. We like to camp at the Morro Strand. The Strand is a state park camp spot on the north end of town off the highway on the beach. Basically a parking lot. It is all pavement, no separations from the other campers other than the painted lines on the ground. But it is right next to the beach and for some unknown reason holds a special place in our hearts. One can camp here in their car, tent, camper, motor home, you name it.
Then there is Montana De Oro. That is in Los Osos, just south of Morro Bay. They are still a camping site, but with pit toilets and the sort. These sites are somewhat isolated, separated by brush and trees. It is not a luxury camp, but a bit rugged. Still a camp site though.
There is the Morro Bay State Park which is a luxurious camping spot. Your typical state park with the flowing water, decent toilets and fire rings. You can even buy the fire wood there.
I do know of a camp ground off Hwy 42 between Paso Robles and Morro Bay, but I have no other knowledge other than that.
If you go to San Simeon north of Morro Bay on Hwy 1 there is a cool State Park there. The San Simeon State Park has two tiers of camp sites. The lower tier is for your typical camping. Hook ups and such. The top tier is way up and back away from the highway and beach. It has the regular sites, but no hook ups, water or toilets other than pits. A fun site with some easy nice hikes around.
All that said, NONE of the camping I just mentioned are what our campers were made for. You might want to go way up the road to Kirk creek and head up the jeep road. It is called Nacimento Ferguson road. It will take you to Fort Hunter Leggett. Camp where you want up there. It has a lot of fingers to pull out on, and up there you can see the world.
I am sure some of our other WTW campers can tell you more of this nice trail and the camping around it and Morro Bay.
Good luck and have fun.
