USGS Spring Sale

To show you how old I am, years and years ago, I was looking at the USGS site and noted that they were trying to get rid of a bunch of old aladades and plain tables to any other federal or state agency for free!!! Needless to say, I ordered several for my office and staff! What's an aladades you say, it's the mapping instrument that along with the transit was used to map the US (George Washington used one) and most of the world over the last 2-300 years and they are now being (then) replaced by laser guided instruments like the theodalite, etc! Well archaeologists -folks who study old things-just love these things-use them to map arck sites. Hell, one of the most funnist jobs I ever had was field boss of a mapping crew (using the aladade/plain table) whose job was spending a spring and a fall mapping all the old arck sites in Yosemite Valley! After I got my new toys, I went over to our mapping shop to show them what i got-and the oldest guy over there (my age) said he'd see them before but never used one-a few years before I retired told some of the new arcks in my area about the aladades & the same response from them. The new things are faster, but not as much fun as the old toys-maybe it was time to retire after all-getting old is hell!:lol:Sorry if i hijacked this thread for a moment-the title just triggered some fine old memories!
