i made the bold remark that we were going up the coast on a slow trip.but never made it started out in Borrego Springs area for a few days then stopped in San Diego for a couple of days, watched the bass fishing contest that was held on shelter island got my juices flowing as they now have kayak division as this is one of our sports i'm going to have to start entering they had 35 kayak's entered and first prize was $1700 not bad for a days fishing!not that i need a excuse to go fishing!(had to throw in picture of my favorite pelican who has been on pier for at least 5 years!) so we got tired of traffic and headed back to the desert.pictures show the old road from Culp valley (above Borrego Springs)to Ranchitea a nice area with few people spent 3 days in this area hiking etc.then spent a day going back down through grapevine canyon only a couple of pictures as i left extra batteries at home along with charger.drive slow and enjoy" its the journey"

tomas tierra yes that is the Salton sea picture spot is about 3500 ft el. if you have not spent any time in the Borrego state park you need to as you are allowed to camp anywhere a legal vehicle can go which means lots of 4wd trails with no atv,s etc as every vehicle has to be street legal.a great winter location in the lower part and also great weather in summer at higher el. we lived in Borrego springs for 5 years in the mid 80's so we know our way around pretty good probably why we go back so much! most of bass were sand bass and rock bass no white sea bass wrong time of year i think. there was a 33 pound halibut caught near the star of india sailing ship which is right downtown San Diego!drive slow and enjoy "its the journey"

Sorry you had to change your plans lq, but when plans change that is when the real adventure begins, huh?

I posted this in another thread in response to a question you had. I thought you might be interested in the info for future reference -

lq - I may be too late to help, but I was fortunate enough to see and hear the Elephant Seals on my trip over Thanksgiving week. It was purely by accident and it took me several minutes to figure out what was the weird bellowing I kept hearing. A very stirring moment with my early morning coffee.

We were about 5 miles north of Cambria, when I pulled over to take in the view. There is actually a formal turnout designated as the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Vista Point, about a mile further north. There were info signs all over that turn out and several cars. Where we stopped there were no signs and no other cars. As soon as we could spot one (their odd shaped heads blend in well with the rocks) we sat and watched them playing in the surf, uninterrupted for half an hour.

I have no idea if a certain time of the day is better to see and hear them, but we were there around 7:30am. Hope this helps and you get to hear them in their element.
