Hello, These might just be questions I should ask Four Wheel Camper direct, but thought I would try here -

On the shell model, can anyone describe the benches that are built around the wheel wells? Does the whole carpeted top lift up? Why is it narrower by the door and then get wider?  I was just thinking it were it gets wider was just storage, I'd rather have the floor space.

Then when there's a furnace, it always seems to be on top of a cabinet in the corner. Is this the only configuration?  Again - I would go for a more minimal setup. See LINK - second pic in gallery shows the furnace

Cabinet in the corner is for the propane tanks. Heater and battery on shell models is above it. If you do not have the heater or propane it is a little wider by the door. I would get the heater. See my build for pictures before and after. I purchased a shell and move my heater forward when I did my build and put a DC fridge over the propane.

In my Hawk shell, only the first four or five inches of the bench lifts up and that storage is only about 7" deep.  If you look at the 1st pic in your link you can see the white metal trim that borders the part that lifts up. 

It looks like, from pic #7, that if you don't order propane you can have the same amount of room on both sides.  The wider part of the bench is to accommodate the wheel wells and the turnbuckles that hold the camper in.  The narrower part of the bench is the part that overhangs the truck bed.

Mine came with propane, heater and battery compartment but since there was no stove, the top is several inches lower.

As RnK describes the the storage box is only 7 " deep. Storage box is on top of the wheel well so you can't have a totally side to side flat floor. The storage box is great because it has lots of room for long items and there are two of them built into the shell. . We keep the awning crank, the speaker lift (Yes BobM I now have it and like it). the legs for our fold-up gaucho couch, lots of other little things. The notch at the end holds the porta-potty during the day and water bottles when we travel.

 

If you plan to cook in it - order the propane tank and vented box.

 

You don't say what part of the country you live in. If you live in the cold North, knowing what I now know, I would get the propane tank and vented box and either the stock furnace or a Wave 3 catalytic radiant heater (no furnace blower).  We live in mild SoCal so a Mr Heater portable catalytic is all we need.
