Hello all so I have been building my truck in preparation or a pop up camper. In the future I will be buying a fwc!!! My aunt and uncle have been traveling in a 1999 palomino pop up for a year and are upgrading. They offered me there current camper for 700 bucks. They rebuilt roof (no leaks) canvas is good 3wy fridge, furnace, dinette etc. I think this is a good start but I have questions. So here it goes and I thank everyone for the info in advance. How does this mount to my truck? Is this a good deal? Weight? Concerns, etc. I apologize for the lack of info as I'm working on a make, model and dimensions as I type this, just wanted to get the ball rolling. Is there anything else I should consider? I do mainly go off road when I camp but not normally crazy stuff just fire roads etc.

Weight is the issue with a mid size truck.

How much does the Palomino weigh empty?

Whatever it weighs add 350 pounds for food, water, gear, etc plus people?

Contact  Palomino to get the weight with the options you have (3 way fridge, etc, etc). Find out what type of frame it has wood - heavy? or aluminum"

The GVWR of the Tacoma is 5500 pounds. Our 2013 4.0 V6 without the tailgate and half tank gas no people weighs 4100 pounds. The axles are rated at 5800 pounds and 10 ply tires rated at 6,000 pounds.

When I go to the desert for a week, Our rig weighs 6100 pounds loaded with a full tank of fuel and one person. The reason the factory gross is 5500 pounds relates to the stopping ability of the brakes. We downshift the auto trans when going down off ramps using the transmission to help slow it down.

We really have to drive conservatively when we tow the Samurai because we don't use its brakes. We could if we paid about $ 800 for the braking device. Hasn't been an issue in the 3,000 plus miles we've towed it.

The weight is not really the issue I have all pro expidition leaf springs which provide 3" of lift which provides an extra 1500 lbs capacity. I'm looking to see if anyone has had experience hauling these campers with a Tacoma and how they mounted it etc.

Most campers use external tie downs. These have always been the best for that ... tork lift.

I use/used turnbuckles that attach to the 4 frame connected bolts in the newer Tacoma composite bed. I improvised some heavy duty rappel anchor type hangers for the 2 front turnbuckles as I surmised these were the most important. Had to drill out the hanger slightly for the as supplied Toyota bolts that seem to be around 7/16"

My Palomino has been mostly off the truck as I use it for work so wanted a set up that I could rig pretty quickly for weekend trips.

The web site does not show the rap hangers that are fabricated from 1/4" plate stock.
