A bit chilly here this morning- glad we live in the metropolitan heat island! Windchill last night was -50°F when I went to bed. Glad we have a nice warm house to hang out in.

We have been thinking about our Midwest friends. Bundle up and stay warm, Spring is right around the corner - a month out.

I wish!  We have another month of possible below 0º temps, and then comes the snow.

 

My trucks antifreeze is good to -56ºF, but a 50/50 mix is only good to -34º.

RV antifreeze is good to -50ºF if undiluted.

Well, it's more-or-less mild here in the Far West -- glad that it's clear today (though I had nothing to complain about, anyway, compared to 1500 miles east of here.)

...Hazardous Mountain Travel this Weekend and into Monday...

.A series of winter storms are expected to bring hazardous winter
driving conditions to the Sierra and Coastal Ranges. The heaviest
snow is expected late Friday evening into Saturday morning. Gusty
winds will combine with the snow to bring white-out conditions at
times. Weekend travel through the mountains is encouraged before
Friday afternoon if possible. Snow levels will start around 6000
feet Friday and drop to 3500 to 4500 feet by Sunday. On Monday,
snow levels will fall to the 1000-2000 foot range, with
accumulating snow being possible for the foothills.

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Travel will be very difficult to
  impossible. Tree branches could fall as well. Total snow
  accumulations of 3 to 5 feet for the pass levels, with localized
  amounts up to 8 to 9 feet near Lassen, are expected. For
  elevations above 2500 feet, total snow accumulations of 4 to 10
  inches are expected on Monday only.

* WHERE...Western Plumas County/Lassen Park and West Slope
  Northern Sierra Nevada. Snow levels will rapidly drop to 4000 to
  5000 feet on Saturday and fall significantly to 1000 to 2000
  feet on Monday.

* WHEN...4 PM Friday to 10 PM Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for significant reductions in
  visibility at times. Wind gusts Friday night and early Saturday
  could top 50 mph.

...Hazardous Mountain Travel Continues through Tuesday...

.Additional winter storms will bring periods of dangerous
mountain travel from heavy snow and gusty wind through Tuesday.
White out conditions are possible along with chain controls, long
travel delays, and even road closures. Travel into the high
country is strongly discouraged through early next week.

Snow levels are expected to lower to 3000 to 4000 feet tonight
impacting the Coastal Range, as well as the Sierra Nevada. A
colder storm arrives Monday and Tuesday bringing heavy mountain
snow and strong winds to the higher elevations. Significant snow
is also possible in the foothills Monday into Tuesday.

  expected above 5000 feet later this evening and into Monday
  morning. Travel will be very difficult to impossible, including
  during the morning commute on Monday. Whiteout conditions
  possible again later Monday into Tuesday. Damage to trees and
  power lines is possible. Additional snow accumulations up to 4
  to 8 feet are expected with locally higher amounts.

* WHERE...West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada.

* WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, until 4 PM Tuesday. For
  the Blizzard Warning, 10 PM today to 6 AM Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for significant reductions in
  visibility at times. Winds gusting over 50 mph will cause
  whiteout conditions in blowing snow. Significant drifting snow

We got about an inch of snow this morning -- tiny light flakes at 25° F.

Little and light enough that I could use a broom to clear my front porch and flight of stairs.

28° here now and dropping. Not near the snow predicted, around 7-8 inches thus far. More coming. Julie loves to shovel the deck, a couple of times already today.
