Get the MOJAVE ROAD GUIDE by Dennis Casebier it will give you all directions and history.

Afton Canyon is a marked exit off I-15 and Peggy Sue"s is an old time diner a couple miles out of Barstow.

Ghost Town Rd., Yermo:

http://www.peggysuesdiner.com/

We consider it a mandatory stop if we're nearby near lunch or dinner time.

My suggestion is to go during the week. On the weekends if the weather is good you'll run into wannabee desert racer types "pre-running" the Road in everything from UTV's to 4 seat "Class 1" clones with 400+HP. Had one of the latter ride my tush for several miles before the mail box, where there is little opportunity to move over and he was being enough of a jerk about it that I wasn't going to risk my vehicle just so he could go fast.

Also, in my three trips over the Mojave Rd. I've always run it East to West and that has been the direction of travel for 95+% of the traffic that I've encountered. There is no rule that says that you have to run it in this direction, just know that you'll likely be running "against the grain" as it were.

All the books/guides are going to recommend against going solo. Heck, I'll tell you its not safe to go solo (and then go right ahead and go solo myself) its a kind of a cya thing. Just started reading the book last night. I'd prefer to run it in a group but I'd probably go solo if I had to. Just a matter of understanding the risks.
