I'm trying to get some ideas for a trip to the coast in October. We would like to go somewhere between Fort bragg and Crescent city. I've done the Usal rd. from the south end to Shelter Cove. Is the road north worth the drive to Mattole beach ? Basically i'm looking for any nice, primitive places to camp and wouldn't mind some dirt /offroad thrown in. The one thing my wife and I want to do is eat at the Samoa cookhouse :)

Where is the Somoa cookhouse? I think the road north to mattole is well worth the drive - I enjoyed it when I did it. From Mattole, take the road north to Ferndale. It's the craziest paved road you will ever drive and the stretches along the beach are magnificent. Behold the only place in the world where the cows are allowed on the beach and you aren't. Smug fricken cows. Gold Bluffs Beach is certainly not primitive but I'd recommend a night there anyway as it's a magical place.

Go for the history, because the food isn't what it used to be. I keep my boat maybe 10 min. from the place and I don't go there anymore.

The last time I was there was in 2006. We keep going back out of habit.
