I had seen these around but never used one until it was recommended when I got my dutch oven. No nasty lighter fluid needed, just a few sheets of newspaper or related crumpled into the bottom, one match, and very quickly you have a pile of white hot coals. Really great when on the move and don't want to wait forever to get a good grilling fire going. I now carry it everywhere (when camping that is...).

I use one for my charcoal smoker all the time, they work great for starting briquettes esp. when you don't want lighter fluid (as is the case when smoking).

in a pinch any cylinder will do.......a fosters can works well.
the wad of paper can support the briquets just fine.
coffee cans work good.
no reason to buy one....just need some gloves or tongs to tip the coals out since cans have no handles.

Wimps. 2/3rds diesel, one third gasoline, a gallon should be plenty. Stand wayyyyyy back.

You may be cheaper than I am The commercial ones do have a nice handle even a shield to keep the temps off your hand.
