I won't put any harsh chemicals down the sink drain and know better than to put grease down there either, but are there other things to avoid?

The bathroom sink at home regularly gets gunked up with black, nasty sludge - I'm guessing stuff growing on toothpaste residue, etc. Any suggestions for preventative care or for cleaning the drain and drain hose?

Hot soapy water is useful. I remember getting frozen up one time where hot water helped. Vinegar, salt and baking soda (with hot water) can also be useful. As for grease there is going to be some unless you also avoid bacon, which most of us find undesirable (to avoid).

I generally don't use the sink.I have a plastic basin that fits in the sink and use that for washing dishes. That way I can use it outside also. The basin sits in the sink and in it is a custom altered bamboo dish rack that stores the dishes and coffee making equipment, while drying.Works nice and don't have to hook up the drain hose.

Thanks, guys, both are good ideas. The plastic basin is versatile and the old home remedies of salt, vinegar and baking soda make sense, too.

I use the sink and generally give little thought to what goes down it. Haven't plugged it up yet. I figure if it does get plugged its such a sort run it shouldn't be hard to clean out.

I try not to let large particles go down the drain. I too think it's a relatively short run without a trap so it should be easy to clean. The sink gets a scrub with dish soap and flushed as part of our pack up. Once home, the outside cap gets removed to allow things to dry out between trips.
