The road(s) in and out can be fun, especially when wet. The ruin parks have numerous camps around them.

The citadel in cedar mesa is a fun hike. Did a few others in that area as well.

I fear mud much more than rough, rocky, sandy or steep.

Thanks for the citadel tip!

I just never drive around on those type of roads if it rains/snow. Just pull over, pop the top and wait.

You can of course go in and out from different roads as well.

X2 and the moki dugway camping. It can get crowded(and windy) but it is till a fun overnight.

Mule canyon?

I will see if I can get there October 8th. The sickle moon sets just after 8 pm and around 8:40 there is a meteor shower peaking at about 9 meteors per hour. Not huge but could be fun!

We love that dispersed site at the mouth of mule canyon. Nice ruins, worked stone and pottery shards only 15 minutes or so distant by foot.

You may enjoy reading about Daniel Tickner who's name is prominent at Register Rock (City of Rocks).  It is an interesting story.  Technical Report 130 (npshistory.com)    It starts on page 26.

Fascinating read. Some of those old-timers really got around!

Tony, although it’s not related to natural history or archeology, this book is about man’s (in particular one man) history and involvement with the Colorado and other nearby rivers.  Pick up a copy of The Very Hard Way: Bert Loper and the Colorado River, by Brad Dimock.   It’s good camp reading.

Steve, thanks for the tip. I found a used copy on line and have it on order.

Well, we will hit the road tomorrow morning first thing for 23 days of wandering. We have a plan, but you all know what happens to plans. Will report back when we return.

New stuff:

- wilco hitchswing (driver's side), kuat bike rack

- gps capable Samsung tablet with a bunch of Avenza maps loaded (still have paper copies of everything)

- tire table, not exactly new but nearly so

- midland walkie talkies

- small lithium jump battery to replace the heavy lead-acid jump battery

Weeded out a lot of stuff we were not using

There has been a lot of rain in southern Utah. So the roads may be interesting, but wildflowers should be out and about. Always pluses and minuses. See y'all in late October.

Tony
