“Instant communication is not communication at all but merely a frantic, trivial, nerve-wracking bombardment of cliches, threats, fads, fashions, gibberish and advertising.”

"The desert will still be here in the spring. And then comes another thought. When I return will it be the same? Will I be the same? Will anything ever be quite the same again? If I return."

- from Desert Solitaire

and although not an actual Abbey quote: included in "The Monkey Wrench Gang"

"oh my desert

yours is the only death I cannot bear"

I don't understand.   Why would anyone want their front porch angry with them?   ^_^

One of my favorite authors. Have all of his books.

I'm late to the party... Your comment was while I was on Lake Powell. That's funny!

....... Yeah wow real words of wisdom there!Already posted this elsewhere but this thread would not be complete without it: Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul

This quote was used in a documentary we watched this evening - Damnation - I wanted to read this quote one more time and hope to god my soul doesn't go to ruin.

I believe Abbey would call that: "Lake foul."

Thanks for the reminder. It's winter and I'm needing a book to read. Something I already know and love. I don't do a lot of rereading but there are a few exceptions. Every few years I'll reread Wendel Berrys' Memories of old Jack. it's one of my favorites. This time I'll dig out one of my old Abbey's.

Edward Abbey

"Benedicto: May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you -- beyond that next turning of the canyon walls."
